barry sanders

if this is a repeat, sorry. i hit some key and it disappeared.

i was watching the nfl network, and they were showing the top
100 players for 2010. this got me to wondering what happened
to barry sanders, who in my opinion was one of the top three
running backs ever. he would have the yardage record if he
didn't retire early for some reason.

i'm a packer fan. WE chose tony man(girl)drich 2nd that year
before the lions took barry 3rd. shows what roids can do.

The "for some reason" you mention had something to do with the fact Barry got sick of having to break 5 tackles just to get back to the line of scrimmage every time he was handed the ball. AMazing how he accumulated so many yards with absolutely nobody blocking for him.

PJ makes an excellent point. With no disrespect to Emmitt Smith, but I always wondered what Barry would have done behind the Dallas line of the early to mid 90's.

i remember catching a brief pieces of 'where are they now'... barry appeared to be successful in the greater detroit area as a businessman. I see his blog/website last listed a personal appearance in 2008 when he was doing charity golf. good for him. a huge talent.

Barry Sanders lives in Oklahoma City. His son, Barry Sanders, Jr, is a senior to be and is also a running back and will attend either Oklahoma State, UCLA, Florida State or Alabama. He is bigger than his dad, but is just is quick and can cut on a dime.

That's interesting info. Thanks!
I remember hearing a pice on him after signing a new contract w/the lions. It was about how he hadn't cashed his signing bonus check(which was $5mil,an enormous amount at that time) and when asked by the team why he hadn;t cashed it because they needed to balance the books and his reply was something like"oh.well its at home in my dresser drawer, hadn't gotten around to it yet". I beleive this was several months after receiving it.
As far as topp 100 on NFL network,i've only seem bits of it. He wasn't on it? No kidding,he was great. The point about what he could've done behind dalls's line back then would've been scary good, that guy could get out of some amazing tacklers.

JOHN
He was the only running back I have ever seen with moves comparable to Gale Sayers. As a Bears fan, even though he was tough on my team, I had to appreciate the artistry of his running.
IMHO- Emmitt Smith was the perfect choice for the Cowboy team and system while Jimmy Johnson was coach. If Barry Sanders would of been Dallas's running back during that time period the rushing record for yardage would have been much higher. Had both Barry and Emmitt played behind the same offensive line Barry would of out gained Emmitt Smith by a huge amount. Emmitt Smith could not carry Barry's jock strap. No contest.

I always felt Emmit was overrated and simply benefited from being surrounded by an all-star cast . It wasn't until he got traded to the Cardinals that I reevaluated that conclusion. Even in his last couple years he could make people miss and find holes that seemed like they weren't there. Some of his best runs came in his last year.

Emmit was the real deal. Best running back ever? No, but he was the real deal.
