Can someone help me with a computer problem?

For the past week or two, everyday I keep getting the microsoft update symbol to shut down and install updates. I always click on it when shutting down but it returns when you turn the computer on again. I have Vista and tried getting info online on how to fix this problem. Tried one Fix It program but it didn't work. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it?
You may want to go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and search for updates and install them manually and then reboot if instructed.....maybe it will help.

If that does not help, you may want to look at the System Restore capability in the Windows Help to see if you can restore your system to a date when the problem did not exist.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you're saying, but I get the Windows Update symbol, click on it, and then click on "install." You don't shut down and reboot until AFTER the updates are installed. If you shut down when you first get the symbol, it will come back because it's telling you that you need to install the updates. Once you install the updates, the symbol will go away.
By clicking on that symbol you may have infected your computer with a virus...you should have your computer checked out.

Hi Sue, I don't get on lva much anymore but when I do I'm glad to see you are still active on the forum! I'm sorry I realize now that I didn't make it clear as to what was happening. When you click the microsoft start button - the symbol on the bottom left side to bring up the menu of programs to the right of the search box is where you can click to shut down the computer. Normally when Microsoft has the update symbol in this box and you click on it, it will install the update and then shut down the computer and then don't have the symbol again for awhile until there is another update. However for the past week or so when I turn the computer back on and click on the start button, the update symbol is there again every time.

I haven't had a whole lot of time to research this problem but did a little bit and what I tried didn't work. Since I'm planning a Vegas trip this summer and on lva more right now, I thought I'd see if anyone here has had this problem or might know what to do.

jphelan - I will give your suggestion a try tomorrow (actually later today since its past midnite now).

I got a few viruses by clicking on a couple of those "update" popups on my old computer so I've never clicked on 'em any with my new computer. No problens since.

Sorry, Jana. Guess I misunderstood. I still don't understand, actually. When I get the Windows Update symbol, it's on the bottom right of my screen. Anyway, good luck with fixing it.
An APPLE a day keeps the bugs away.
Well I finally had a chance to manually do an update, it didn't work and I got an error code message. Did a search on microsoft.com for the error code and clicked on the auto "fix it" box. Tried the update again and it worked. Rebooted and so far all is well. I guess the update symbol kept appearing because the update was not really being installed because of some kind of error in the system.

Anyway, thanks everyone and especially jphelan for your advice. I'm not very computer savy so when I have a problem it usually takes me awhile to research and fix it. And of course there are usually things I need to get done on the computer first (if that's still possible) before delagating time to research and fix the problem.
