The Economy & Las Vegas

Since the economy looks like it is headed south again, how do you think it will affect Las Vegas?

I think it will see another downturn in visitors and those that do go will spend less on all parts of the trip.

Particularly hard hit will be the high end shows that don't like to discount as well as major headliners who may have to take less money as ticket sales lag. You may also see headliner shows and concerts cancelled due to poor sales. Also hurt will be the high end restaurants who don't like to discount or use coupons because of their image.

The hotels will continue to discount ( great for us!!) but service & maintenance may suffer as there will be less cash available for it.

Us frugal gamblers will probably see more discounted shows, particularly thrugh the LVA Gold program (which offers more timely discounts) & in some cases better gambling opportunities. Airfare may come down

However we may see more bankruptcies and some hotels closing
I am curious to see the new steps the bean counters and politicians will take and what asinine changes they will come up with to squeeze more money from Vegas visitors. Vegas, which used to be considered "recession proof", is paying a high price for this administration's policies of "change we can believe in". Don't forget to vote in the next greatly anticipated Presidential election. It can not get here soon enough.
Let's see. Dubya cratered Wall Street. Obama cratered Wall Street. Guess it's time to vote Libertarian.

hoops, nice post. Hat's off to you. Good question where it will go. Seems the tat-brat crowd was able to fuel higher-end Vegas during the recent malaise, but is that run coming to an abrupt halt? Not sure I'd want to be a locals joints going forward, either. Middle- and lower-middle Vegas took such a huge hit, who is going to keep feeding the voracious appetite that relies so much on locals?

Then again, a Venetian weekend is still far less expensive than going to Rancho Santa Fe or Carmel. And Red Rock Resort beats hell out of the Disneyland Hotel.
I used to work for a big toy company that made big profits, but wanted more, closed down shop here is the U.S. and moved over seas. Over paid executives are destroying this country. I was going to book a room in September, waited to long, now It's up 20% more for that date.

How do you access the LVA gold program?
Just wondering if you have to pay extra or if any discounts are available at this time.

Like to know that myself.

If they start squeezing visitors Las Vegas will not be a cheap place to have fun. Friends (LV regulars) were just saying the other night going to Las Vegas is not cheap anymore--meaning the better restaurants prices and air prices with all the add ons. Las Vegas will surely be effected by the economy for a long time to come. Spendable income has dried up for a lot of folks. It is not just LV utilities, gasoline, food, clothing, and everything else has been increased.

I have found that with some effort (thank you LVA for example) one can eat in a very nice restaurant or go to a show for a reasonable price. Being a bean counter I have found that most 5 star restaurants are not worth the significant incremental cost over a pretty good restaurant.

Casinos such as the M are very vulnerable as I think their business plan was to build on the fringe of Vegas and have the city expand past them, thus giving them a base of local customers, but that hasn't happened as the city has stopped growing

There should be a link for it on the LVA Homepage and it's definitely Free to join up for everyone (not only the Paid Subscription people). And there are no additional charges that I know of for anything that is offered there (which is room and some show discounts).

And once you sign up you will eventually start receiving separate weekly e-mails (basically from Anthony) explaining what the deals are and possibly some pros and cons for the offers.

Many thanks, I found it.
