"You Really Got Me" - Van Halen, the original Van Halen with David Lee Roth, not that Sammy Hagar crap

"Red Red Wine"...Neil Diamond. He put the sad in that one.
I know that Neil Diamond wrote and performed that song in the 1960's, but I like UB40's version even better.

And, as a matter of fact, I fairly recently read that Neil Diamond himself said that when he first heard UB40's version of his song, that he also liked it better than his version.

First Cut Is The Deepest _ Rod Stewart
Also covered in recent years by Cheryl Crowe. I like Stewart's better.
The song was originally written and recorded by Cat Stevens on his first album. At the time his manager and the album's producer were looking to make him into a "pop idol." The result was an overproduced, hyper upbeat version of the song. Totally polar opposite of what Cat Stevens is known for.

Good Luck!
Ric at Joes
With a little help from my friends

AND

She came in thru the bathroom window

Joe Cocker nailed them both, the Beatles wrote them

Well, hell, I didn't know he wrote it!
Is the UB40s that raegae version? It's good.
I still like the Neil.
But I hardly ever hear it played or seen on any lists of his songs.
I guess everyone likes the other one better.
That's OK too!
"Green, Green Grass of Home," by Tom Jones. The original was by Porter Waggoner.

Absolutely. Tom Jones owns that song.

I just love this thread. In no particular order, these are most of my faves, and if you don't know these covers, go get 'em now!

The Butchies: Your Love (a Lesbian punk band does a super-slow version of The Outfield's 80s hit)

Cat Power: Satisfaction (Nobody since Mick has done this tune with this much feeling)

Malcolm McLaren: About Her (haunting cover of She's Not There featured in Kill Bill 2)

Johnny Cash: One (some preferred Hurt but I love this U2 cover)

Everything But The Girl: Downtown Train (two women do the classic Tom Waits tune)

The Cat Empire: L'Hotel de Californie (an Australian reggae band does the Eagles' classic in French)

Cowboy Junkies: Sweet Jane (this version actually beat out The Velvet Underground's original on cover-vs-original.com)
