Help with Spam email

I thought it wouldnt hurt to ask here since I know we have several members in the IT and computer field here. Also figure some others might have experienced this.

My problem is a spam emailer. I receive one or two spam messages from them a day. I am running Windows 7 and Microsoft Live Mail. I also have Norton. The email comes from an AOL account apparently and I have informed AOL.

I have right clicked on the title and designated it as junk and it is moved to the junk email folder but I continue to receive them. I checked to block the sender and the blocked email addresses show it blocked but I continue to receive them. I checked to block the domain but still get them!

I am not interested in solutions which suggest another mail client or operating system and thank you but will stick with PC right now

Any help appreciated.
Ok, found a setting under Norton under Network settings that allows me to add an email address to block. See if this helps. Any advice is still welcome.
Try blocking the title. For example I was getting a lot of spam from Kings poker. They use a different email address every time. I tried many ways to block it but without success. I have several accounts and the problem one was Hotmail - which now runs on windows live. Last week I found a pulldown menu titled sweep. I opened that and it led to a header - manage rules. That led to - create new rules. I created a new of new rule - if title contains Kings Poker delete immediately - and it worked. Nothing since.
Hope that helps

I'm wondering if you unsuccessful attempts to block has to do with a difference in the stated "sender", stated "reply to" and the actual sender?

That is, it may look like it's coming from a specific AOL account, but it might not be.

Thats a good bet. I've received emails like that. If you hit the "reply" button the actual email address should pop up. Use that domain to filter. I'm not familiar with AOL filters but I'm sure they work the same way all the other service providers do.
Many thanks for the help so far. So far the spammer lists the same email address and I cant find rules to try to ban just his name.

The Norton trick did not work.

Reply shows the same AOL address.

Another friend had me forward the email to him. He thinks, like you TB and PJ, that probably not originating from AOL and he will try and pin down where it is originating from so I can ban that domain.

AOL has not responded to my forwarding of samples they asked for but would guess they dont give individual replies.

For the life of me I dont see why these folks continue since I never respond to them, never click on a link and if I suspect it is spam, or after the first time I open them, I delete them.

Of course I dont use AOL but Road Runner so my next step, if my friend cant find out, is to contact their tech support and see what sort of filters they might have.
For those that have Hotmail, I discovered something the other day by accident. If you hover your cursor over the sender's name (over in the list column) a drop down will come up with: the person's name, their email address, 'Send email', 'Find email', 'Move all from....', 'Delete all from......', 'Schedule cleanup'.

If I remember right, 'Schedule cleanup' gives you the option to delete an email after 'x' amount of days (you choose the #). Which works great for me as I receive a lot of emails from retailers w/coupons. Usually they aren't good for much more than a week so I schedule some to delete automatically after about 2 wks.

Marcr, I know you don't have Hotmail so it won't help you. But I used to have RoadRunner and had the same problems as you. I could never really block emails from any one sender. I'd call their support to ask what you're missing because what you're doing isn't getting it. Good luck!
Pam;

GMTA. I was just on with RR tech support yesterday since nothing was working. I was afraid the answer would be since I am using Windows Live Mail (not the RR provided one) and Norton, not the software they provide they would direct me to either Microsoft or Norton. Instead excellent support. Logged on to their website where there is a mail icon. Led me throught the steps to block the email from their server so supposedly from my inbox. They had me type in the AOL address since it was also the address which appeared when one hit reply so not sure if it will work or not. Next few days will tell.

Once again appreciate all the help and support folks, thank you and will let you know if it works.

Something to think about: the address that comes up when you hit "Reply" does not have to be the address that sent the e-mail. E-mail formats allow the sender to specify the "Reply" e-mail address, and it can be anything. It also allows you to specify a name on the account. I can send e-mails with a name attached that says "Gary Loverman" and the Reply address is a Harrah's account. However, in the e-mail header will list the actual sender, which server it came from, and I think even the path that the e-mail took.
Thanks TB and all who responded.

Just to let you know the RR fix worked wonders, no more spam from this source after I entered the address in their system the way they showed me. Now I suppose I could remove it from the list and see if it reappears, after all could have just been a coincidence, but am happy so why tempt the fates!

Thanks again
