LVA Book Club, February 2011

I read "Still Alice" last year. It was chilling. Very well done.

I'm still reading mostly "escapist" fiction. Not romance novels, though -- the books I read have to have a good story, and usually some kind of mystery involved. I just started "I Still Dream About You," by Fannie Flagg -- southern/humor/mystery. I didn't even know she was still writing. I enjoyed "Fried Green Tomatoes" years ago, so thought I'd try her new book.

I've pre-ordered new books from 3 of my favorite authors -- Diane Chamberlain, Maeve Binchy, and Jodi Picoult -- but they won't be out for a couple of months.

(My daughter gave me a great Hanukah gift -- a gift card from Barnes & Noble, lol.)
for the last 28 days, my reading obsession has been the harry potter books. our son finished them over Christmas after his roommate berated him enough for never having read them. he loved them and told me that at the end of the last book, he felt like he'd been accepted into an exclusive club (albeit a large club). he told me "you have to read them--- but i know you well enough to tell you to have plenty of time to just sit and read."

between each book i made myself take a day or two off -- just to relish what i'd read. at the end of the sixth book i broke the rule -- started seven that evening. the seventh book is much heavier, so i'd read to a good stopping point and set it down for awhile....trying to solve the mystery and rest my mind.

i've never been a big fantasy reader but i can surely understand why kids and adults - even non-readers - took off with these when they came out...little did i know what i was missing! someone asked me which was my favorite. it's hard to say since i basically read them as one very long book.

now i'm bound and determined to pick up (again!) and finish 'wicked' --

Half-Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls

Crazy over this book. Wish it didn't end.
About her Grandma as a girl...

You might know her number 1 best seller about her own childhood- called "Glass Castle"
Doesn't matter what you read first- they are simply chilling, compelling and real w/o self pity.

Sue sends me what she's reads- I never want for good reading
