I watched it.
First, about the music. It ended on Dusty Springfield I think, "You don't have to love me."
Two other music notes: the band at the party did an intrumental version of "Walk on By". I like Bacharach, so I noticed.
Second, I was curious who made Zoobie Zoobie Zoo famous, internet says Sophia Loren. One character described it as a burlesque number, I'd say "torch". I liked it.
About the episode. I didn't watch last season, had tired of it the season before. To me, Mad Men can be a like a bad date, lots of teases and promises and suggestions but never culminates in anything signifcant.
For example, a big theme of last night was the money problems of the firm juxtaposed to Roger's handing out money like slapper porn. In the past, a theme or thread like this led to a big nowhere. I fear it will again. It's style over substance.
What I appreciate about the writing is the race issues is juxtaposed to the gender issue. The black men being told they can leave because they were hiring a secretary. Or Joan's mom saying that Joan's husband might not allow her to work. But will there be any resolution to all of this or is it just landscape? And I want characters to evolve -- at least some of them to change.
I liked that Peggy was uncomfortable holding the baby. And the inside joke about her handing the baby off to Pete was funny.
Another problem I have, I'm finding Don to be a yahoo. He has always been morally ambiguous, but I want him to be a sympathetic character. He's not. Look how he reacted to Megan after the party. He explains, he doesn't want to be center of attention. But it's not always about you, you egotistical moron.
Finally, even though I didn't see any of the last season, I don't think I missed a thing. It feels exactly the same.
