My Oscar Ranking

Well I finally finished watching all the Best Picture nominees, as is my custom. Tougher these past couple years than it used to be, now that there are ten of them!

Here's how I'd rank 'em in terms of how good I thought they were:

10. Inception
9. Winter's Bone
8. The Social Network
7. The Fighter
6. The Kids Are All Right
5. Toy Story 3
4. 127 Hours
3. Black Swan
2. The King's Speech
1. True Grit

"127 Hours" was the biggest surprise for me. Way better than I thought it was going to be.

"The Social Network" has gotten a ton of buzz and is apparently a front-runner (along with "The King's Speech") for Best Picture. But I didn't really get the hype. Maybe it's because I don't use Facebook.

LIKE your list Jeff.

But, I put #1 as The Kings Speech.

I had it #1 originally too. It was a last-minute flip-flop.

What pushed "Grit" over the edge for me was what I call, for lack of a better term, it's "literary-ness". That sort of rich symbolism that opens up a movie for deep analysis after the fact. More to chew on later, I guess.

Well, that and Roger Deakins' beautiful cinematography.

But it won't win Best Picture. That's probably going to be The King's Speech.

yes King's Speech

Turns out the grandson had all the grandfathers/therapists notes in the attic so Colin Firth & J. Rush got to do an accurate portrail

also the guy who wrote the script was asked not to do so until the wife of King Richard (or whatever his name is) passed away...
I'm thinking Kings Speech is a front runner

I've only seen Inception from that list- i'm so behind

I didn't know that background info 'Cat. Very interesting.

Hubby thought the same as you Jeff. He really liked True Grit also
as well as Kings Speech, but figures K.Speech will win Best Pic.

A few weeks ago I went into Wynnlv.com and pulled up his futuress on the Oscars.
They listed 10 for best picture--5 each for the following Actor, Actress,Supporting Actor, supporting Actress, and Best Director

I listed the first few in each:

James Franco 127 Hours 12/1
Jessie Eisenberg The social Network 15/1

Best Actress
Natalie Portman Black Swan 2/5
Annette Bening The Kids Are All Right 3/1

I love Aaron Sorkin's work- I hope he gets something for Social Network- like Best screenplay.
That guy can write!!!!

(He wrote West Wing)
Interesting odds, TheGreek.

I think Hailee Steinfeld blew Melissa Leo and HBC out of the water in the Best Supporting Actress category. The Oscars do tend to be biased towards actors who make a big, showy transformation (lose/gain weight, or wear a fake nose, or be willing to look dumpy, etc.) and/or play real-life people. Leo may win due to doing both.

Actually, the whole supporting vs. lead distinction is really muddled this year. Steinfeld really did have a lead actress role in "True Grit", I don't care what the Academy says. (I guess that at least keeps her from having to compete with Portman, who has her category sewn up tight.)

And Annette Benning was arguably in a supporting role in "The Kids Are All Right". Ensemble pictures are always tough calls, I guess.

And was Colin Firth really more of a "lead" than Geoffrey Rush? Questionable.

JJ
And what about movies that should've been nominated, but weren't?

Was "Inception" or "Winter's Bone" really better than "Secretariat?" C'mon...
