Sounds like Winchester Cathedral. Can't quite remember the name of the band, but I think it had the word "Vaudeville" in it. Oh-boe-dee-oh-doe.

From 1984:

They're starving back in China, so finish what you got

That is a good one - John Lennon - Nobody Told Me

************ NEW ************

Written in the Seventies
Finally Released in the Nineties -

Whatever happened to the lives that we once knew?

I'm drawing a blank.

I keep thinking back to the old Buckingham's song, Don't You Care, with the lyrics, Whatever happened to all the good times we used to have.... Obviously, that ain't it.

So far, I dunno.

Let's try some clues -
Brit singer made the demo
Brit band reformed to make the recording

More lyrics

Whatever happened to
the lives that we once knew?
Can we really live without each other?

Where did we lose the touch
that seemed to mean so much?
It always made me feel so...

Tony, I googled before I read your hints, so I'm out.

Funny thing is, I now know the song charted very well in the US when it was released in the mid-90s, but I barely remember it. I can't explain why that is so -- it's a mystery to me. Sometimes one just slips by, I guess.

Sorry.

It's a strange one Jim. I would have thought that it would still be getting lots of airplay, given it's historical significance - but it rose - then vanished. Strange. I'll leave it up a while longer in case anyone else is still thinking about it.

I guess that "Free As a Bird" won't fly
It was by the Beatles. There is a good story for anyone who wants to Google it.
I'll leave it open as I may be out tomorrow morning.

The original version of this Country/Pop crossover song was recorded by the songwriter in 1961. It hit #1 on the Country chart, and #3 on the Pop (Hot 100) chart. It's been covered many times:

When one heart tells
One heart, one heart goodbye
One heart is free
One heart will cry

I think that's "Don't Worry About Me," by Marty Robbins.

Here's a silly one I heard on the radio yesterday ...

"I've been good,
but I can't last"

Just a guess: Christmas Don't Be Late, by Alvin and the Chipmunks?

To keep things moving, I'll go ahead and post lyrics. If it turns out my guess was wrong, we'll go back to guessing Sue's lyrics.

This is from 1970:

We're callin' everyone to ride along to another shore
We can laugh our lives away, and be free once more
