Name the song the line is from Part II

Edit: Oops! (Edited to avoid explaining)

Off one of my faves from the era, "From the Hungry i". The guys claimed the song had been written by Lord Invader and his Twelve Penetrators but the web says it was somebody else.

Far as I know, the Beatles weren't into calypso. Noahcat's monkey song was the Beatles song. Sorry for the confusion. I'll stay in my corner for a while (not my guess), or maybe just slip away somewhere. Don't know Sue's but "Girl" must be in the title.
Change the girl to squirrel and you’d be right, Bard.

Sue’s song is “Mississippi Squirrel Revival” by Ray Stevens.

Let’s try this:

What would I give for just a few moments
What would I give just to have you near
Billy someone..
where he says" if you come back I'd subtract 20 yearssssss from my life"... (talk about co-dependency, huh?)

..."I've been away so long I may go wrong and lose my way"

Sorry, n’cat.
That’s not it. I think you are talking about “At this moment” by Billy Vera and the Beaters.
Mine is older. Try 1968. It’s by a soul singer with initials C.C.

Again:

What would I give for just a few moments
What would I give just to have you near

BTW, yours is “Do you know the way to San Jose?”
Yes, Billy Vera was who I was thinking of--

yours isn't Cab Calloway...

10CC?

I'm feeling playful

Chris Cross.... no

That’s really cute, n’cat.

That’s a ”no”, a “no” and a “Are kidding?”

Pretty sure Cyn's song is Slip Away, by Clarence Carter.

How 'bout this oldie:

And to your lonely pine box came
Just a preacher, me, and the rain

I'll try a few more lines:

The faded shirt
The weathered brow
The calloused hands upon the plow
I loved you then, and I love you now
______ _____

One dark cloudy day they brought you from the fields
And to your lonely pine box came
Just a preacher, me, and the rain
Just to sing one last refrain
For ______ _____

Sorry, everyone.

Obviously, that one wasn't quite the hit that I thought I remembered it to be.

The song was Reuben James. The version I remember was a 1969 thing by a group called The First Edition, whose lead singer was Kenny Rogers.

By the time they did this one, they had already dropped in to see what condition their condition was in, and Ruby had already taken her love to town.

Can't think of anything new at the moment, so I'll leave the floor open.
