How do you get a Lawyer for a Will?

Yellow pages?
Friend referal?
How much should it cost?
Should he/she be local?

What KIND of Lawyer>???

Thanking you in advance for your life experience.
At legalzoom.com we put the law in your hands.

If its good enough for the guy who defended OJ its good enough for me.

Wills are pretty simple, and many lawyers will put one together for you. In some states, you can hand write one and it will be legal.
However, a will is not always the best thing. Depending upon the estate, trusts or other arrangements may be beneficial. Thus, having a lawyer who is knowledgeable in the field can be valuable.

Yes, JM, the elsewhere that you posted this thread is in the Las Vegas (General) Message Board.

There I suggested that you check for lawyers through your local State Bar Association (since laws do differ from state to state) or maybe also at: https://www.Angieslist.com where there might be reviews on lawyers (although I don't know that for sure).

I hate stuff grown-up like this
but it needs to be done.
I don't mind the death part-- who can figure or imagine how their demise will be?
It's the business/legal end I rally and rebel against.
Work has a hand written notarized will of mine in their safe.
Afterall, I practically live here..lol
Do you have a Legal Plan as part of your benefits package at work?

We signed up during open enrollment at my wife's company, got the will done and then dropped the plan after the year was up.
JM, you need a lawyer who practices in the area of wills and estates.

You also want a lawyer who is familar with the tax issues and estate issues that apply to your situation. So you should probably choose a lawyer who practices in your state (or in the state in which you have assets).

The cost will depend on how complex your situation is. A "simple will" should be relatively inexpensive.

The best source for a referral may be another lawyer in your area. A lawyer who practices in any field should be able to refer you to a good wills and estates lawyer. If you don't know any lawyers, finding the right lawyer may be a bit of a challenge. I would not recommend the yellow pages. As for friends or colleagues, ask them what they liked or disliked about their lawyers. Finally, many lawyers will not charge (or charge very little) for an initial consultation. So don't be afraid to talk to more than one lawyer before selecting the one you want.
We bought(my wife did actually) a will software package deal that seemed to do what we needed but that was amny years ago,i suppose maybe i should dig that up and review it as it probably would need some updating. I don't really remember being to enthralled doing it,probably the same reason for your relutance as well, but i do remember it seemed somewhat like a turbo tax type program. It got pretty specific and detailed ,all we had to do was go get get it notarized i think. I beleive it was called wills and estate planning, i'll find it if you want more detail.
