An observation about a movie...

So I'm watching "The Sting" the other night and a realization hit me:

The movie takes place in 1936.

It came out in 1973.

I was watching it in 2011.

So it's a 38-year-old movie set in a time 37 years before it was made.

Which means that the movie itself is now "more historic" than the events in the movie were when the movie came out.

I don't why that struck me as strange/interesting, but it did.

One of the great movies of all time.
That is interesting!

And part of me suggests: Welcome to Middle-age.

It's where everything you think of as still relatively new, is ancient history to teenagers.
I was once talking to a teen who was telling me about being into "Old Movies". And I asked for an example. He said, "like the Godfather".
I did a spit-take.
Interesting. I've had similar realizations about films and books.

Also released in 1973, "American Graffiti" looks back a mere 11 years, so it passed the "more historic" mark 26 years ago. I'm not sure why that equation makes me feel even older.

If they made "American Graffiti" today, it would take place in 2000, and the soundtrack would suck.

...part of the reasons why Dirty Dancing was such a hit; timing

My boyfriends son was tinkering w/ his motorcycle- I commented that was a true Dennis Hopper ride. He said "I never heard of Dennis Hopper" Oh, Brother! Easy Rider, man
JM - he might remember Hopper for his role in Hoosiers over his role in Easy Rider.
or Blue Velvet..
I was the watching the "new' True Grit with my 23 year old daughter and her boyfriend. After a few references to the original, it became very clear to me that they quite possibly didn't even realize there had been a previous version.

"YOU MEAN YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE JOHN WAYNE VERSION?????????????????????????"

"What John Wayne version are you talking about?"

Well, at least you could understand what the Duke was saying all of the time!

Another defining moment in my life....

Movies aren't the only things that become more historic - - so do we!!!
I just realized - I hit my 300th post (now 301). It took a decade. 25 more years or so and I get to that magic 1,000, the level they used to give a T-shirt out for.

Life is good.
Just think what it would be like to watch the 1963 movie of Cleopatra.
