Occupy Wall Street - Height of Irony

The shops around the park will see increased business, as there will be thousands of people descending upon it. The pizza places close to the park downtown have expanded their hours and hired new employees as a result of the OWS crowd. The one place interviewed last week in the Post said he was selling a couple hundred extra pies a week. In fact, the increased business had allowed him to lower prices. His pies went from $18.95 to $14.95, and he can't keep up with demand. The Wall St area used to be pretty deserted on weekends, now places that were open M-F have expanded to seven days.
Its a shame so many of you are letting Faux News do your thinking for you, but thats certainly nothing new. After all, everyone knows businesses always have nothing but the best of intentions.

Billy,

Please, PLEASE tell me how I can receive Fox News using rabbit ears and a digital to analog converter, because that's all I have!

Anyone selling food close to an occupied city park will see an increase in sales. Other businesses will suffer because their typical customer base won't want to be harassed by the protesters just to go shopping. Folks who would normally be visiting the park for reasons that the park actually exists won't be going there.

Your portrait of the park as being deserted on weekends flies directly in the face of what it is. From Wiki: "Bryant Park is one of the signature examples of New York City's revival in the 1990s. Essentially crime-free, the park is filled with office workers on sunny weekdays, city visitors on the weekends, and revelers during the holidays. Daily attendance counts often exceed 800 people per acre, making it the most densely occupied urban park in the world." Now it's full of Marxist anarchists who haven't showered in weeks. If I was a pizza peddler who saw my gross income grow by $1500/day, I too would hold my nose to supply the demand. ....supply and demand.....Capitalism!
If bill Ryan actually went to lower Manhattan he would have noticed how much it has changed. Places like Battery Park City have significant resident populations. Tourists go to the South Street Seaport, Battery Park, and the line to go to the Statue and Ellis Island are several hours. It has been a 7 day neighborhood for years.

The OWS crowd of several hundred are adding little to the local business as much of the food is donated and cooked by volunteer chefs. NYC police have incurred almost $4 million in overtime as well as hundreds of thousands in sanitation overtime.
Does watching Faux News lower ones reading comprehension?
I referred to the parkdowntown, not Bryant Park.
Hoops brings up SSP, BP and the line to go to Liberty Island, while never mentioning the area around the encampment. Thats like saying the Strip in Vegas is busy, so all of Vegas is a 24-7 happening. Maybe he should wander down there. He might just learn something. I'm in the Wall St area about twice a week. I was there a week ago on Sunday and very surprised to see my favorite pizza place open on Sunday. They used to shut down at 2PM Saturday and reopen Monday.
Have you actually been down there yet?

BTW- while the protestors are being fed by the makeshift foodkitchens, they are often outnumbered by tourists, the media and cops- all of whom have to eat.
duplicate post, my bad.
I'm unclear, so the Tea Party is pro-Wall Street or not?

Go back and reread the original post, then tell me who has reading comprehension problems...

I work across the street from Bryant Park here in NYC and the OWS crowd will be demonstrating in the park today.

The location is the height of irony for several reasons:

1) It used to be a drug dealers haven until it was cleaned up - helped by donations from the evil 1%

Actually, it was a place where office workers and students could go and buy loose joints from the big bad drug dealers.

2) Most of the park is taken up with an ice skating rink which has free admission due to a sponsorship from the evil Citibank

Which is real nice for the 2% of New yorkers who iceskate, not so great for the 98% who would rather be enjoying their park.

3) The rest of the park consists of small retail shops owned and operated by individuals. This demonstration will result in zero sales today for these people. Since these shops are only open for 10 weeks this is a real hardship

Not true. The rest of the park consists of open space for the use of the peoples of New york
This park used to be for the enjoyment of the people who work and live in the area. Now it is closed to the public for weeks at a time for a bizarre event called Fashion Week, and then ten weeks a year, outsiders come in, take over the park and sell trinkets to tourists. I'm not sure thats what the founding fathers had in mind when they set aside space for public parks.
I'd wager not a single booth there is operated by a small business. The rents alone keep all but the big companies out.

4) We were advised to bring our lunches today, so the local restaurants, pizza shops, delis will also have reduced revenue

Boo Hoo Hoo. Wonder where the thousands of cops, reporters and gawkers will be eating?
