I'm pretty sure that would be Joe Louis.

Re Grant being a good general, a story was told on one of the History Channel shows, somebody (another general?) was talking to President Lincoln in the manner of jealously 'tattling' on Grant, telling Lincoln that Grant was drinking fairly heavily. Supposedly Lincoln said "Well find out his favorite brand of whiskey. I will send him a case." Something like that.

There are several versions of this story. A slightly different one has the President saying- Find out what he's drinking and send it to the rest of my Generals. more than likely- the stories are not true and seem to have sprouted up in the 1880s. almost all first person accounts of those close to Grant refute the rumours of his drinking during the war.

Perfect timing.
American Experience ran the Robert E. Lee bio and I found it by accident.
I suspect the end of his life he had that realization like the Alec Guiness character in Bridge on the River Kwai where he thinks much of his career has been a waste.
