Those of You Born 1930-1979

Those of You Born
1930 - 1979

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE

1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers
Who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing,
Tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs
covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

And, we were O.K.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles,
Locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode
Our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.
As infants & children,
We would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts,
no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.

And, we were O.K.

Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day
Was always a special treat.

We drank water
From the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends,
From one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon.
We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar.
And, we weren't overweight.
WHY?
Because we were
Always outside playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day,
As long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able
To reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We did not have Play Stations, Nintendo's and X-boxes.
There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable,
No video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's,
No cell phones,
No personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS
And we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth
And there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
Although we were told it would happen,
we did not put out any eyes..

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and
knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just
walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law
was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best
risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years
Have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility,
And we learned how to deal with it all.

If YOU are one of them?
CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others
Who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the
lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives
For our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know
How brave and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house
With scissors, doesn't it ?

Because we grew up in the aforementioned era, today's generations don't understand our values and viewpoints about living a wholesome life. I would take our generation any day over today's congealed insanity. They really were the good old days.
Hear, hear! Well said. From a guy born in '65, with two older brothers, an older sister, and a younger brother.

Married my beautiful wife just over 3 years ago, and picked up a, now 17-year old daughter. Great kid, but wouldn't know the light of day if it hit her in the face. And to actually play outside (even when she was growing up, as I dated her mom 7 years, I know, I know, before asking her to marry me) unheard of. Or to actually TALK to someone, live-and-in person, fuggedaboudit.)

Yes, I do have the PS2 and the PS3, but never really have time to play it, much. No, I still do not have a cell phone, and I am still just fine.

We have a 2 year old son, and I hope I can raise him the way I was raised. I have already got him drinking out of the back yard hose. Now I need to teach him how to suck water out of the sprinkler heads at the nearest city park. Oh, what wonderful days they were.
So true!!!

Don't forget eating dirt-- it was OK. \ it had minerals in it
Aparently,
you were suppose to eat a pound of dirt.
I use to go out for Nightcrawlers w/ my Dad after it rained (for fishin')
He'd keep them in an old drawer w/ dirt, egg shells and coffee grinds.
I rarley even see dirt now adays
I can see older, agreeing with this, makes sense to me.

I disagree with adding those born in the 70's. Not the same, IMO.

While I certainly appreciate being born in 51 and living the experiences mentioned above, I have little doubt that a similar remark was made by people born from 1900 to 1930 who remarked how they were able to get by without television, automobiles, fetching their own water from the well, one room schoolhouse, etc. etc.

I remember my first year teaching in 1973, I was sitting in the teacher's room listening to the older teachers complain "Teaching isn't what it used to be ......... Children aren't what they used to be ............. Parents aren't what they used to be." Well I went on to have 28 of the most glorious teaching years that you could imagine. I would have done it for nothing since I loved it so much. At the end of my career I started saying "Teaching isn't what it used to be ......... Children aren't what they used to be ............. Parents aren't what they used to be." At that point I knew it was time to retire.

My point is that every generation looks back on their days with nostalgia. I have no doubt that today's children (when adults) will look back on their days and criticize the current generation. They may be saying "We got through life without taking vacations to other planets" or some such thing! Hopefully they will say "We were able to exist with world crisis .... this current generation doesn't know the meaning of war and only has know world peace and coexistence.

P.S. - Also remember that today's generation doesn't have to learn how to hide under their desk in their schoolroom in case of a Nuclear attack like we did in the 50's.

Worst generation of American history= 1955-1975. lot of problems we face today are because of this generation
Hate to rain on your parade but that list is loaded with misinformation. Little League has never had try outs and every player on every team has to play in every game. Its been like that since its founding.
