Transporting fire arms

Does anyone have first hand knowledge transporting hand guns in checked bags? I want to get through TSA security and check points with as little hassle as possible
Your airline will almost certainly have its firearms policy on its webpage, best to check there first.

For example, here's Alaska Airlines' policy.
I did, Seems each airline has a policy but it is TSA that seems to be very hard to deal with. For example, The airline I am flying on allows a passenger to transport up to 17lbs of ammunition and the fire arm needs to be unloaded and in a locked hard shell container. I must check in at the counter. No self check in or curbside check in. I am good with that. Where it gets tricky. Agents words, Not mine, "We inspect to be sure it is secured properly and within our guidelines. Then we give the bag to TSA.. From there we have no control over what they do" I have looked at the TSA page. I was just looking for someone with experience doing this. Thinking is that someone that travels carring a firearm could shed some light on the gray areas.
Thanks,
Joe
I work for Frontier Airlines and prior to that
AA. Basically it's easy to travel with a
firearm--people do it all the time! But
the firearm has to be CHECKED! (unless you're
some type of law enforcement person that is
allowed to take their firearm on the aircraft
with them in a carry-on--I'm guessing you're
not)
Your firearm must be checked in a hard-sided,
lockable container. This can be located in
your suitcase or checked by itself. (usually
hand guns and smaller go inside a larger suitcase
and rifles etc are checked by themselves).
You must tell the agent at the check-in desk
that you are checking a firearm. Most airlines
with then put some type of paperwork with the
firearm. You will have to take the firearm
out of the container and show the agent that it
is un-loaded. There usually is no extra charge
for this. After going thru the check-in procedures
at the tix counter the firearm goes to the TSA
for processing. I always have my pax go with their
bag w/firearm in in to TSA and tell TSA that there
is a firearm in bag. Keep keys handy in case you
have to re-open the firearm for TSA. Follow TSA's
instructions--don't offer anything--they'll ask you
for what they want or need. After it is scanned
it's good to go and you can leave to proceeed to gate.
You can also take approx 10 pounds of ammo--it's best
to take in orig packaging. Check the airline you're
flying on web site -- it should have all the info
you need.

Good information, Thank you!!!
