Traveling with cats

We are considering wintering in Las Vegas this year. Anyone have any ideas on traveling with cats, we have two, cross country in a car.

Good luck to you. Our cats whine and cry non-stop when we take them on a 5-10 minute drive to the vet. I can't imagine hours of it but it is pretty funny to hear. Unless you have had them in the car and they seemed ok with it, not sure it will work. You should talk to your vet about sedatives (for the cats, not you).

I've flown cats as cargo on passenger airlines, it works just fine. American Airlines has good advice on shipping cats.

If I was in your situation, I'd try that, because driving cats that far with a litter box in the car does not sound fun. Maybe you could find someone, a cat boarding business perhaps, that'd board the cats and transport them to or from the airport when needed. I really think that'd be a lot better solution for everyone than driving them cross country.

Thanks for the advise so far. I really can't imagine it either might have to postpone the idea until they are both dead. My son has traveled with his cat without alot of problems but he just moved from Boston to DC and said the cat vomitted the whole way.

Any other info will be appreciated.

I first traveled with my cat in 1968 from Georgia to Massachusetts. Since then I have traveled with various ones all over the world. I traveled with several of my cats in the RV for years. Yes, some tend to get car sick and one did that if she was fed within a few hours of traveling.
Now I have just one that loves to travel in the car (and not in a cage or sedated). When I get out his leash and harness he knows we are going somewhere. He is even happy to take a half day trip shopping, but I avoid that during the summer heat. His longest trips were in 2010 (over 3500 miles in two weeks) and in 2012 (over 4000 miles in two weeks). We normally stay at La Quinta or another hotel/motel that is cat friendly not just pet friendly (meaning dogs). The last trip with him was 10/11 July and the next will be 21/22 August.
It is a matter of working with them on short trips first (even if that is just sitting in the car for awhile and then going around the block). Mine wears a harness while traveling and not a collar as it is more secure when he is on his leash. He's actually made a trip to Las Vegas four times. It really depends on the cat..
I drove one 12 hours from Ohio to Brooklyn and she refused to use the litter box.- that alone can spark a urinary infection (Cats are finiky about everything)

Never have a cat loose in a car- they can get under the gas pedal/ very dangerous if not deadly.

carrier or cage/ with a petting/holding/comforting during gas breaks
