Watson makes Jeopardy appearance on Monday

Anyone else looking forward to watching Jeopardy as a computer takes on two great champions?
IBM has put millions into this effort, and I applaud them. Some great work has been done and a good application of machine learning. NOVA dedicated a show to this.

I've got Monday through Wednesday written into my calendar to be watching. I don't care whether the machine wins or loses. It's the process.
I can't believe everyone else wasn't atingle with bated breath about this.....

Now if this had been about adorable sock monkeys.......

We meet again, Trebek !
I heard that the computer is a chip off the old block!

High-powered supercomputer? Cutting-edge AI research? Nerdy game show?

I am so there!

I'll miss Monday's show, but they'll be doing it for a couple of nights, right?

Jeff... exactly!!! It's so..... erotic!

It runs for three days.
I fear it'll be one game that's broken over three days, and lots of description of the computer.

I'm hoping it'll be three days of game.
If I was the head programmer for Watson I would make him ring in immediately after every answer and reply with....

"Who was your mother ?"
My fear was realized. They're stretching a single game over three days.

The best move: they're displaying the computer's top three answers to every question even if it doesn't ring in.
One of the classic problems occurred. The computer gave the same answer as someone else who had been ruled incorrect.
The person said, "the 20's" and the computer then answered "the 1920's" seeing the two as different.

Bummer. Well, since I missed the first night, I guess I'll just wait until it's all over and watch them all together. No sense rushing home to catch tonight. Ah well.

Computers are funny that way. A somewhat related case-in-point happened to us Sunday night. I had a Pandora station playing while we made dinner, and it played "One Note Samba" twice in a row (albeit by two different artists). What tripped it up was that the second version was listed under the original Portuguese title, "Samba de Uma Nota Só". It didn't know it was the same song.
