The fact that Midway was a war battle is, I think, a coincidence. The word does come from the "midway" at a fair.
According to the Chicago Department of Aviation's website:
"Midway Airport originally opened in 1927 as Chicago's Municipal Airport. [...] In 1949, the City of Chicago officially renamed the airport in honor of the Battle of Midway."
