Evanston was a very conservative city when I went to NU. It was a dry town at the time. We had to go to the south side of the border street between Evanston and Chicago (Howard St.) to find a bar. Drinking age was 18 at the time, so we were "legal," but there was no place to get a drink in Evanston. The WCTU was quite powerful back then.
