Windows 8 and Open Office

Ok, as posted in reply to Ms Flowers you can see got my wife a brand new laptop for Christmas with Windows 8 installed. What didnt come on the machine was any type of word processing suite! Not even the old Windows Works! Office is rather pricey.

I have heard lots of folks like Open Office and I see the latest version is compatible with 8. Given it is free it is very tempting.

1. Anyone have Open Office and care to review?

2. Anyone have it with Windows 8 and tell us how you like it, how it works?

I don't have Windows 8, but I've used Open Office for years. I've had no problems with it.

Can you still playWindows 7 games on it? Thats the biggest gripe I have with the new windows versions every couple years...I always lose the ability to play some of my favorite games.

I hear you PJ. They always say they will be backward compatible, if nothing else in the compatibility mode, but never seems to completely work that way. I should have listened to the old saying to skip every other windows upgrade. Vista sucked, 7 was decent, should have gotten her 7 for this machine as well.

Terry also received a new laptop for Xmas and was frustrated by the Windows 8 interface.

Thanks to the help of our son, we found a free program that you can download that will "superimpose" Windows 7 over Windows 8. The result is that your computer looks and feels like Windows 7 although you can still access the Windows 8 homepage if you want to.

We use Open Office and don't have any complaints.

I purchased my laptop a few months ago before 8 debuted, so it came with 7. I was able to access games on 7. When I upgraded (??) to 8, no more games.
On the bright side, I have more time on my hands now ...
