WTH do people eat pet food?

Costco often has whole chickens for $.69/pound. Even my nearby national chain grocer has 'em for a buck per all the time. I read this mania about people subsiding on Alpo or what not, and I'm floored. Rice is cheap cheap. Something green or otherwise healthy is ALWAYS on sale; you know, corn at 5-10 for 100 pennies.

I don't get it.
Seems kinda weird. Especially since you can get half-eaten muffins out of the dumpster behind Dunkin Donuts.

It's still probably the low cost and also the convenience.

It always seems to be the elderly who do this, and with old age sometimes comes dementia.

I'm also guessing that it's much easier for some to just open a can.
They not only eliminate the actual cooking, but also eliminate some of the associated tasks that would come along with it,
such as washing dishes, hauling heavy grocery bags, cleaning up after, etc.

Some elderly find all of this very overwhelming and physically challenging.
I believe they sometimes hide this due to embarrassment, or their concern for not wanting to burden anyone.

Rick
ken2v,

Could you kindly link to some background information on what you describe as "this mania about people subsiding on Alpo or what not"? I'm unaware of this alleged phenomenon.

For the life of me, I don't understand why a person would eat Alpo and Kibbles and Bits. Dog food is not good for humans and it is. More expensive than the chicken you pointed out or generic bags of Cheeerios, etc.

Only in Dayton.
First, I would consider betting that most dog food is better for people than what makes up most of the calories of what people actually eat. Purina dog chow versus Doritos -- I bet the dog chow is much better for you.

Second, why is it always dog food? Why not cat food? Why not duck food? Or Gerbil food?

I agree with Rock n Rick's statements on the elderly. In some, the brain can no longer kick into gear enough to prepare a meal and even opening a can can be a challenge. So sad...

As for Gerbil food - doesn't Richard Gere like that stuff?

Age, depression mentality, depression, mental illness, all the above. Canned stuff requires no teeth, and as some said no preparation. Why a can of Chef Boyardee wouldn't be preferable, who knows.

A friend's 70-ish mother-in-law would eat nothing but boiled neck bones. They would take her all kinds of good food, including fried or baked or broilded chicken, but she wouldn't eat it. When they'd bring her to their home for a nice meal they had to boil her up some neck bones.
