WTH do people eat pet food?

I still believe it's the cooking, dirty dishes, actually opening the can, etc ......
All of this for us is no big deal, but some can find these simple tasks almost impossible to do,
.......... things we don't even think twice about.

Plus there's the fact that some, at a certain point, are actually afraid to use the stove,
worrying about a fire, or failure to turn the burners off, with valid thought because of a previous accident.

Rick
I can give you one not yet considered reason, which was very enlightening to me years ago when I was a home health nurse.

Living on a fixed or limited income, there is often not much left over for groceries or pet food. Many elderly and homeless persons have pets which are often the only companions or most important companions in their lives. They would rather go hungry or do without than have their pets starve or be without, so they use their remianing money for pet food, not people food and share with their beloved.
LOL--when I read the title all I could think of was when my 2 older brothers double dog dared me and offer to pay me a dime if I ate the sheeps feed. I did. I would do about anything for a dime at the time. BTW-- I was only like 5 years old. I told my mom and my brothers got grounded and I got to keep the dime.
Alpo does have Filet Mignon flavor...cooked in savory juices...."With Angus Beef! A rich hearty meal with appetizing aroma". What's not to like?

How does one get to a Costco w/ no car or with a walker?
You're legs go.. your sight goes/ who wants to spend for detregent to wash the grease off a pan of cooked chicken- it's all too much work.

Kibble is good. I ate it as a child. less salt than Fritos

O, Death
O, Death
Won't you spare me over til another year
Well what is this that I can't see
With ice cold hands takin' hold of me
Well I am death, none can excel
I'll open the door to heaven or hell
Whoa, death someone would pray
Could you wait to call me another day
The children prayed, the preacher preached
Time and mercy is out of your reach
I'll fix your feet til you cant walk
I'll lock your jaw til you cant talk
I'll close your eyes so you can't see
This very air, come and go with me
I'm death I come to take the soul
Leave the body and leave it cold
To draw up the flesh off of the frame
Dirt and worm both have a claim.

O, Death
O, Death
Won't you spare me over til another year
My mother came to my bed
Placed a cold towel upon my head
My head is warm my feet are cold
Death is a-movin upon my soul
Oh, death how you're treatin' me
You've close my eyes so I can't see
Well you're hurtin' my body
You make me cold
You run my life right outta my soul
Oh death please consider my age
Please don't take me at this stage
My wealth is all at your command
If you will move your icy hand
Oh the young, the rich or poor
Hunger like me you know
No wealth, no ruin, no silver no gold
Nothing satisfies me but your soul
O, death
O, death
Wont you spare me over til another year
Wont you spare me over til another year
The canned pet food comes from somewhere, however it gets in the house. Plus it's not free. That's my point. There are alternatives. A pre-cooked chicken from Albies costs five or six bucks. It will last for days in the fridge. It is easier to serve than opening a can. A light-eating senior could nosh on it for a good four meals.
Hey Ken, welcome back to the thread you started by describing "this mania about people subsiding on Alpo or what not".

Any chance you could link to something showing this "mania" you describe is real and not imaginary? I'm not familiar with this mania.

First, I would consider betting that most dog food is better for people than what makes up most of the calories of what people actually eat. Purina dog chow versus Doritos -- I bet the dog chow is much better for you.

Second, why is it always dog food? Why not cat food? Why duck food? Or Gerbil food?

I agree with Rock n Rick's statements on the elderly. In some, the brain can no longer kick into gear enough to prepare a meal and even opening a can can be a challenge. So sad...

As for Gerbil food - doesn't Richard Gere like that stuff?

As for Richard Gere the answer is "only if anal induced"
We visit THREE DOG BAKERY each trip to Las Vegas (6 times a year.) Never have eaten and will probably never attempt to eat any of the product but our puppy loves it all. The place is super organized, super clean and super friendly so all considered much better than just going to a Kroger type store and buying a can of something??????
