I believe their support of Sanders and Stein were designed to siphon off Hillary support to make it easier for Trump to win the general. They encouraged minorities to vote for Stein to neutralize their vote and they tried to keep Sanders in as long as they could to weaken Hillary's standing among Democrats.
The Russians were successfull in creating discord and divisiveness, or increasing it anyway. Glen Beck who has now became a moderate, voices alarm at the polarization of the left and the right, with no common ground. He suggests it may be time for a 3rd party, made up of common sense people willing to negotiate and make compromise.
