217 Repugs voted to....

...Cut money for the care of our veterans.

Another reason to vote Democratic in 2024.

These cuts will likely never get through the Senate. If by some unforeseen miracle occurs and they do pass it in the Senate, Biden will veto it. We'll see.

Their bill also includes 38 billion in government subsideis for Ethanol which the Republican Representatives from Iowa made their vote contingent upon.

I'm not saying thats a bad thing.   Its just worth noting the next time Tom or Boilerman wants to talk about "free shit" or Liberals and their support for "magic energy".

I wonder why the RepubliQ keep shooting themselves in the foot. Most veterans are conservatives. Why do this mostly symbolic gesture and piss them off?

Congress is famous for pissing off their electorate..both / all sides. I haven't seen / perused the details of that bill and I'd have to in order to objectively see whether it's God or the Devil in the details. It's usually one or the other depending on the persuasion of the  beholder. Admittedly, I'm generally in favor of spending cuts ( as you're aware) ..provided those cuts don't specifically make life harder for the people who have given service towards our own protection and defense. I think the debt ceiling was increased as a specific part of this bill, and those debt ceiling increase allowances were the bait from the R's to eventually achieve passage.

Again, it'll never get by the Senate and / or Biden, likely. Study HR 2811 ( I looked it up) for yourself; it's an R legislative bill..you're not going to like it. *l* It won't ever see the light of day, most likely. But it doesn't mean we can't argue about it for a couple weeks..to no avail.

Of course, it has no chance...so the obvious question is, why did the RepibliQ bother? Is it just another piece of performative art--a virtue-signaling exercise? Because as legislation, it's a pointless dead duck.

The RepubliQ have shown no appetite for compromise or honest negotiation--about ANYTHING. Their most recent futile and stupid gesture was to offer a one-year increase in the debt ceiling in return for TEN years in budget cuts. I mean...seriously?

The RepubliQ have NO interest in governance. They're like an angry toddler who throws himself on the floor and kicks his legs in the air if he doesn't get exactly what he wants. For them, "compromise" is a dirty word. And they know damn well that that is exactly what Biden prides himself on--so if they came up with some actual negotiation, it would probably work.

But their desire to not give Biden anything that resembles a victory overrides any inclination toward governance. Heck, the Democrats approved many of Trump-turd's moves if they agreed with their objectives.

I kinda wonder why we don't sell it to Mexico. They depend on corn as a staple much more than we do, and even mild shortages there have a devastating effect on the people.

Here in Oregon, we dunk it in gasoline to make it more...uh...corny, but for whatever reason, that E85 stuff has never been popular. I think maybe it isn't good for some types of engines.

"Cut money for the care of our veterans."

I read through, or should I say I scrolled through, HR 2811 (thank you, Charles Higgins) and didn't see anything about "money for the care of our veterans."  I certainly could have missed it.  Please specify where veteran care is addressed in the bill.  I am a retired VA nurse (1980-2014) and always interested in this issue.

The complexity of these bills, it is a wonder that anything gets accomplished in Washington.

I dont have a problem with Republicans putting forward an agenda of spending goals.  Thats why we have a budgeting process.  They won the House so they get to put forward a budget.  Thats fine.  But thats not what this is.

They are threatening to not pay for legislation that has already been passed unless their new legislation can take its place.    And both the president and the Senate should politely raise their middle finger.  And so should you.

8 years of Obama and Republicans held the debt ceiling hostage under the same pretense.   4 years of Trump and they grant unconditional debt ceiling raises.   And now we get to go back to the Obama game.      I guess Republicans think playing with our national credit is a winning issue for them.    Good luck.
