Soon, it'll be the Republicans' turn. They'll get their chance to stand up and defend Trump, hopefully earning brownie points or at least avoiding being the target of a tweetstorm.
The thing is, there really is no sensible defense or excuse for Trump's actions. That's why the Republicans have so far resorted to attacking the process itself and carefully ignoring Trump's actions. There's been a lot of screaming from them as each tries to prove himself the ideal Trump stooge.
So I was wondering, what will be their core argument? I think it'll be along the lines of the gradual change in narrative as the House impeachment proceedings played out. Note that these are sequential:
1. He didn't do it.
2. Well, there isn't any evidence.
3. None of those 67 pieces of evidence count.
4. Well, OK, he did it, but we're cool with it and it certainly isn't an impeachable offense.
5. Trump didn't obstruct Congress because he can do anything he wants. He said so!
6. Hunter Biden killed 1,499 people and set the Reichstag fire, so we should be focusing on him.
7. Hillary sent emails. What about THAT??? HUH??????
Note that these are in order of desperation as well as absurdity. They mirror the sequence of arguments that the Trump lackeys have previously used. There is, of course, also:
8. Scream at and insult the Democrats. That will serve as a distraction from any discussion of Trump's guilt, and
9. Trump acted out of simple love of country in trying to, uh, stop corruption in Ukraine, and the fact that Hunter Biden is the son of his likely 2020 opponent had absolutely, positively nothing to do with it.
10. Fuck, Mitch, you really want us to say that? No one in his right mind will believe it.
11. Acquit!
What we have to look forward to is two days of Republican rhetoric and bloviation. Watching Lindsey Graham speak is like getting a battery acid enema.
