688,000 people to be thrown off food stamps

The federal government will block states from extending SNAP benefits to high-unemployment areas because, y'know, if you can't get a job, it must be because you're a lazy bum.

The savings are projected to be $5.5 billion over five years. However, Trump's wall is estimated to cost $20 billion and will consume $750 million in annual maintenance, so starving 688,000 people won't even begin to pay for the wall--just for its maintenance. Trump will have to further slash social benefits to pay for it. What's next? Medicare? Social Security?

I'm sure our resident Trumpers are coming in their pants at this news. The inferior classes starving to death! What could be a sweeter outcome? And of course, those people vote Democrat for the most part--so we'd be further solidifying the dominance of the Republican party!

Utopia for Trumpers: King-for-life Trump (and his anointed son, eventually) preside over a fascist dictatorship where only the middle class pays taxes and the poor are encouraged to gradually die off. Oh, and everyone who survives will be white.

In actuality, without all of the outrage demonstrated here by Der Fuhrer, the requirements for SNAP will be changed. Of 30 million recepiants of SNAP, approx. up to 688,000 able bodied adults without children and who are not disabled between the ages of 18-49 will lose benefits if they don't work 20 or more hours a week for 3 months in a 36 month period in areas of 6% or less unemployment. The majority of people who will lose benefits reside in California.

I'm disappointed that no one has responded to this post so far. I'd really like to hear your opinions.

No more "free shit" for you.

Requiring able bodied adults to work a little bit doesn’t seem that restrictive.

Associated Press provides the details.

I actually agree with the legislation.    Holy shit !

Single moms with kids, elderly, and disbaled get food stamps.      Lazy adults dont.   I'm fine with that.

Historically Republicans offered legislation that simply made accross the board cuts to everyone on these programs which was stupid.   This is targeting the right people.   I support it.  Especially in the low unemployment environment we are in now.

Headlining with "thrown off"...typical.

Read and wait.  This affected my state the last couple years.  People in receipt of assistance were notified of what they needed to do for extension/continuation of the benefit.  They were given eight months to provide information supporting their need, via a simple form documenting that their status had or had not changed and they requested the extension.  They could use the web site, email, snail mail the form in, phone it in, go in person to register.   Many did not return their application, so the grace period was extended.  When no info was received letters sent, and sent, and sent; visits to the home to help those get re-signed up.  Much effort to not "throw off" anyone who still met the need.  Still many chose to ignore it, some took pains to hide from the ones coming to help them.  When finally notified of their removal from the benefit (and even yet how to reach someone to help then get recertified) the howling began.  Of course some who never replied had obtained jobs and income and figured they would no longer qualify.   They still might have qualified even with improvement in their status, but their inaction contributed to backing up the system, more work (including overtime) for the workers.  Including that some had died or moved away.

Kevin said he likes to pay taxes to help the poor and needy.  I do too, but I object when mine go to moochers and scammers of the system, and there are plenty.  Problem...a govt run process so onerous that rubber stamping every application on the front end became more doable than vetting every application.

Well, Der Fuhrer has gotten his requested responses ...

There are in fact  losers that suck off the system.  Liberals need to learn these people exist.   Conservatives need to learn that is not the profile of everyone on programs.

Good things will happen when those two facts become part of the collective consciousness.
