The real Trumper viewpoint is that EVERYONE on ANY kind of public assistance for EVEN A BRIEF PERIOD is a lazy, worthless bum. Therefore, debating the details of the SNAP program with them is pointless. They think it should be abolished altogether.
I guess that's why so many people are attracted to conservatism. It apparently endows you with the ability to determine who deserves to live and who doesn't.
I do burst out laughing, though, when any Republican talks about the money that slashing benefits will save. These are the same people who want to piss away some $25 billion on Trump's wall--roughly five times the amount that will be saved with Trump's SNAP benefits cuts.
Our Trumpers are far too stupid, apparently, to understand that a so-called "able-bodied" person may not be able to find work, for any one of a number of reasons. Mark mentioned the obvious difficulty of finding work when you don't have a place to sleep or shower, don't have a phone number, can't afford transportation, etc. etc. etc. there are also various physical and mental conditions that could prevent an ostensibly "able-bodied" person from working, or at least make it extremely challenging to find and hold a job.
It all comes down to simple compassion and human decency. I have those things, and they don't make me noble; they make me a human being. But Trumpers lack them, and that makes them something much less than human.
