I've never been able to understand how or why people are interested in watching real or video combatants punch and kick each other, or why it's fun to assume the identity of such a combatant and pretend to punch and kick, but the popularity of such games is universal and undeniable. Hell, they filled the Colosseum every day with people who avidly watched combat I would consider sickening.
So I guess the reason the game is still relevant is that kicky kicky punchy punchy is deeply appealing and entertaining, somewhere in the lizard brain that our supposed intelligence is built around.
