Since 2014 there have been 11 cases of the hemorrhagic fever Ebola reported in the United States. Nine of those were contracted outside the US and traveled into the country. Two were contracetd by nurses treating a patient who had flown into the USA from Liberia and brought the virus to the USA.
In August 2018 an outbreak of the Ebola virus was declared in the northern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In September a resident of Butembo, a city of about 1-million residents, died.
. . . in June 2019 cases were reported in neighboring Uganda.
. . . in July 2019 cases were reported in the DRC city of Goma, population estimated to be 2-million.
The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo a global health emergency, citing the virus's recent spread into Goma, one of the country's most densely-populated cities.
