Pretty sure "presenting themselves at a port of entry" is what Kevin meant by people "presenting themselves at the border and asking for asylum". So you are both talking about Legal immigration. He just seems to think that the illegal immigration isn't as high as you or David think. I don't know the numbers to comment further on the illegal immigrants.
Does anyone have the numbers of Legal Immigrants vs. Illegal Immigrants that come into the US every month or year, say for 2022 or 2023?
