Conservatives have a heightened fear response compared to normal humans--this has been well documented in several peer-reviewed studies. And since the fear response is one of the strongest reactions to stimuli in the human psyche, it overrides rationality. In particular, the default setting is "get rid of/avoid Bad Thing" rather than the slower, more accurate, and more cumbersome "is this really a threat"?
Just look at conservative race hatred, "replacement theory," etc. etc. The specter of a society where white people no longer run everything makes conservatives absolutely fucking freak out. But very few of them step back and consider whether that is or would be such a bad thing. The fear response short-circuits the conservative brain.
That's why when some nutjob comes along promising to keep the (whoevers) "in their place," conservatives joyfully embrace him even though it's obvious to a child that he's a tinhorn con man.
