Cjen, I certainly don't participate in these forums to engage with Trumpers. Rather, I view their presence as an unavoidable unpleasantness, like mosquitoes at a picnic. The sad fact is that wherever you go in this country, you are forced to interact with Trumpers. I would prefer they all stayed home and had sex with their Trump blow-up dolls and chewed on their MAGA hats. But that's not going to happen.
It's a bit of an overstatement to say that our country is divided like never before. The truth is, it's always been divided--the difference now is that the really evil creeps have been encouraged to crawl out from under the rocks and state their hate messages in a full-throated roar. Trump has "legitimized" race hatred, white supremacy, extortion, bribery, fraud, rape, and utter disdain for the rule of law; he has betrayed friends, ruined alliances, and caused chaos. There are, sad to say, millions of Americans who are positively turned on by these aspects of Trump's behavior. It's now socially acceptable to joke about shooting Mexicans!
I don't think compromise will be reached, whether or not it's even possible. The reason is: cognitive dissonance. When facts are presented that contradict people's beliefs, very often, their response is to deny those facts--or attack the persons stating those facts. For instance, there is ample evidence Trump is a traitor--but Trumpers deny that evidence because to admit it would be to also admit that they've been supporting an evil, corrupt asshole. That would conflict with their self-image as good people, so the only thing they can do is deny, deny. deny--and suck desperately on any alternate-reality tit that is offered, such as Fox News.
As an example of what I'm talking about, read David Miller's ("Stalker") inevitable response to this post.
