As always, I view the problem not as Trump per se, but Trumpers. The idiots in the audience went right on clapping when he said that, instead of pausing and saying "Huh?" I guess they don't know, either, that Colorado does not border Mexico!
In this country, we should despise stupidity, stupid decisions, and stupid people who make stupid decisions and say stupid things. But somehow, Trump's stupidity and that of his followers have been elevated to being seen by "the base" as positive qualities. "Duuuuh, me loves da uneducated!"
Trump assumes since New Mexico has Mexico in it that it couldn't be part of the United States. Sort of like he assumed Puerto Rico wasn't part of the United States and illegally withheld aid from them.
