This was inevitable with electric cars...since the gas tax pays for roads and California trains to nowhere.

It makes sense, since the gas tax is essentially a use tax on users of public roads, and electric cars use those same public roads.

Since electric vehicles do not use gas - except for hybrids - only charge owners of electric vehicles by the mile. If California is going to charge ALL vehicles by the mile, then there should be no gas tax.

It should be noted that the program is only in the pilot stage and may not be implemented at all.

Also, California isn't unique in this idea--eleven different states either already have or are considering surcharges on EVs to make up for lost gas tax revenue. Some states are taxing EV charging station usage. Texas hits EV owners with a $200 additional registration fee, which underlines the hostility to EVs found in a state run by the fossil fuel industry.

Every new piece of proposed legistation begins by being in a "pilot stage". Your quote here -Texas hits EV owners with a $200 additional registration fee, which underlines the hostility to EVs found in a state run by the fossil fuel industry.- is asinine and typical of you. The surcharge is there to help offset the loss of revenue that electric vehicles do not pay because they use no gas, therefore not paying any gas tax.

Kevin and I agree on this.

It's to punish them liberals who are buyin' them fancy elecitrical cars. The oil companies want their revenue, and it's a darn tootin' crime iffen they don't git what they deserve.

The gas tax is a use tax, and how much of a use tax you pay should depend on how much you use the service in question. Those who drive more contribute more to wear and tear on the roads, and should therefore pay more use tax. It's unfair to hit someone with a use tax simply because they own an EV.

As usual, California has it right. The more you use the roads, the more you pay. Tay-ucks-ass has it wrong. People who drive 1,000 miles a year and people who drive 30,000 miles a year will pay the same. How Texas STOOOOPID.

Has Oregon gone to the mileage charge concept?
