The physical ACG guidebook used to have several informative articles like this one, in addition to a bunch of great coupons. Steve Bourie has tried to keep the website alive, but of course, the coupons have gone bye-bye, like most of the LVA coupons from back then have.
It's pretty easy to avoid falling into the comp trap: you just have to maintain the realization that the casinos generally comp at 20% of your theoretical loss. So you have to lose $5 to get $1 worth of "free" rooms or whatever. If some guy walked up to you and offered to sell you a $1 bill for $5, you'd refuse. But that's what the casinos do with their comps.
