Recent unemployment data came out. The surprisingly low figure was 13.3%. Trump pranced around the White House lawn. Republicans immediately said they would not approve any further stimulus money, since everything was obviously going to be swell, in time for the election.
Except, there was one problem. Or should I say, several problems.
The first was that the data were wrong. Five million furloughed workers weren't counted, because a furloughed worker is technically still employed. Nevertheless, they're supposed to be counted but weren't counted this time. If they had, the reported unemployment rate would have been over 16%.
The second was that the drop in unemployment was because the Paycheck Protection money that was part of the stimulus package had finally gotten to small businesses. You know, that stimulus package that was crafted by Democrats and passed through the House despite Republican opposition.*
*Check out how many House Republicans voted against it.
The trouble with that? The Paycheck Protection program is only funded through the beginning of July. And Moscow Mitch and his fellow Republiholes have said that even if the House approves additional stimulus money, they'll block the bill. So come July, the unemployment rate will shoot up again.
So, to recap: Trump and the Republiholes are crowing about a drop in unemployment rates that is due to the implementation of a program they fought tooth and nail to stop; they are using that drop as a pretext to block further aid, even though doing that will wipe out the recent employment gains; and they fudged the data to make the unemployment rate look lower than it actually is.
Do these scumwads have anything on their minds other than reelecting the Orange Asshole?
