Haha, government has been outside AND inside your computer since the so called Patriot Act was introduced in 2001. The agencies have been sucking up more than just your metadata for decades, especially the NSA at their giant data centers as well as their direct lines into telecom. What Iggo is saying is a pretty common urban myth. The reality is that raw data is well-nigb useless--someone has to sort, collate, and analyze it. And given the flood of raw data according to Iggo--who's doing the analysis? It would take an army of people, and not a small one, either.
This is where some people say aha, but what about AI? The truth is that for now, at least, AI is a myth. Even the most powerful computers have ZERO reasoning power (one of the reasons why they still can't beat all humans at chess or poker, even though they process data a million times faster). So give them a torrent of data from which to extract meaning, and they'll go down rabbit holes ten thousand times before they find anything useful. One major weakness is that they know how to find correlations but not causations.
It makes for better movies and TV shows to flog the myth of AI, especially since the computers are always malevolent and take over the world ("for your own good").
