Congratulations To Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez For Her Upset Victory

I miss the day when even Liberals expected the able bodied to take care of themselves.

The problem is health care costs are so high that in order to have a profitable policy anybody of middle-class income over 35 years old wouldn't be able to afford the premiums the insurance companies would be required to charge. Not to mention, if they actually had to use the policy, they would likely be looking at $20,000 to $30,000 in yearly out of pocket costs.

We are throwing good money away to keep private insurance companies afloat even though their business model has completely failed.

So far Ms. Ocasio-Cortez has failed to demonstrate clear understanding of international affairs and domestic matters.

i.  She had previously expressed her concern over the Israeli "massacre" of Palestinians.  When asked in an interview to clarify her position on "the occupation of Palestine", she made some vague comment about "Palestinians experiencing difficulties" and then waved her hands in the air and explained [correctly !] that she was "not an expert on geopolitics on this issue."

n.b. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez graduated from the Boston University College of Arts & Sciences in 2011, with a degree in economics and international relations.

ii.  In a later interview she was asked about the [strong] economy and low unemployment.  She explained that  unemployment is low  "because everyone has two jobs."

From Reason :

__[P]eople working multiple jobs has no distorting effect on the unemployment rate, which is calculated by taking the number of unemployed people and dividing it by the number of people in the labor force.

__[E]veryone does not have two jobs.

5% of the population incur 50% of the costs. Until this gets resolved, health costs will remain high & Medicare will remain bankrupt.

I have read several google sources stating that illegal aliens make up 3-4 % of the current population in the United States and that 32% of Federal inmates are illegal aliens. Think about the cost of having these illegals in the U.S. and just where this money could go for actual worthwhile programs that U.S. tax payers should have access to. Build the wall and deport these criminals.

What do you suggest euthanasia?

I was responding to Tom's post, not yours. The wall is too expensive and pointless. Even most Republicans see that. My suggestion on how to deal with illegal immigrants is the same as before. The come here for work, so put them to work.

Why does Trump need to import low skilled immigrants to this country to work at Mar a Largo when there are already low skilled immigrants looking for work here?  For that matter why doesn’t he fill the jobs with American citizens?

Unemployment is also not low because "obama faked the unemployment numbers" ...but perhaps DonDiego can remember some people who floated that idea on this very board.

A Senator from Oklahoma has made the argument that climate change is fake because it snowed in the winter time - and he had a snowball to prove it.     if Ms Cortez says anything remotely that obtuse I will disavow her immediately.

How's about:

"Capitalism has not always existed in the world and it will not always exist in the world.  When this country started, we did not operate on a capitalist economy."

Quick Quiz: If the USA was not a capitalist economy at its founding, what was it?

Hint:

Capitalism: an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market.

Answer to DonDiego’s quick quiz:

We are not a capitalistic society....or a communist society...or a socialist society.     We have attributes of  all those ideologies littered throughout our laws and that’s been the case from day 1.

There is an intelligent debate to be had on where lines should be drawn and to what degree the government should play in our economy.    A prerequisite to that debate is that people who engage In it actually have an ideology that is based upon their principles and not based upon the team they cheer for in politics.   Hence you won’t have that intelligent debate on this board.

But people who believe we live in a capitalistic society today had better do their homework....and Ms Cortez is not the least bit obtuse for pointing that out.

Ahhhh, . . . P J Stroh answered a question which poor old DonDiego did not ask.

Here is the question which DonDiego asked:

Quick Quiz: If the USA was not a capitalist economy at its founding, what was it?

DonDiego recognizes socialist-related government policies have arisen within the United States, . . . notably, f'rinstance, Social Security which is headed for significant reductions in 2034 unless Congress can come up with additional funding.*  Socialism promising benefits which it cannot deliver is not uncommon; those politicians making the promises receive immediate benefit for making unfullfillable promises.

*Congress will.
