The recent RepubliQ gamesmanship and blackmail is probably nothing but performance art (done badly). If they actually shut the government down again, they'll fuck over every government employee and cause an escalation in interest rates on government obligations. It'll cost trillions of dollars. And no, they're not going to be able to carry out their threat to cut Social Security and Medicare (I'll bet their constituents are really happy about that goal of theirs!).
I was wondering, though, just how much would it cost us? I found an article on The Hill that referenced Moody's projections if the US credit rating was lowered because of a default (that has happened before, after the last Republican crusade that actually did shut down the government for several weeks). The short answer is: $12 trillion. Not to mention a doubling of the unemployment rate from 3.5 to 7 percent, and a shrinkage of the GDP by 4 percent.
Note that this amount is over six times the amount of the Trump tax giveaways.
The RepubliQ should be ashamed of themselves. They probably can't make it happen, but even THREATENING it is profoundly stupid and evil.
This is the GOP, the party of fiscal responsibility.
