Part of the problem is that "liberal" is used as a pejorative term by conservatives. All it means is "open and receptive to change." That's it!..........
I think that is actually a large part of the problem. The term has been distorted in the U.S. for decades.
This distortion has worked to the advantage of a lot of groups. Some of these groups seem to worship Carl Schmitt and his world view.
From the Age Of Enlightenment until starting around World War One . Everyone understood the word differently. Liberal (and liberalism) is a wonderful word. A beautiful idea.
It follows great thinkers like John Locke, Voltaire, Jon Stewart Mill, Thomas Jefferson, Adam Smith, Thomas Paine, Frederick Bastiat, F.H. Hayek, and so many others.
Not only does liberal mean change but it means liberation.
Liberalism destroyed feudalism and serfdom. It tore down the caste systems. It ended slavery. It formed Republics and other Representative Democracies.
It demanded universal suffrage. It encouraged marketplaces. It toppled monarchies and dictatorships. It (mostly) ended wars of conquest.
Liberalism encourages an environment of peace, friendship and cooperation with all mankind.
That is why I am proud to follow the liberal tradition. That is why I believe it is necessary to reclaim the word liberal. There is no better word to describe that school of thought.
