Disney yanks Kimmel's show following backlash over Charlie Kirk assassination remarks

Oh, no, Mark, I didn't mean to imply that I thought Jimmy K is "deserving" of getting fired.  As you said, I tend to run on in my postings, and thanks for pointing that out.

NO way do I think Kimmel "deserved" what happened.   Bad timing perhaps, any joke related to the shooting.

As said, people watch late night comedy to be entertained, not informed.  Fine line I'm sure.

Candy, I don't see the issue as whether Kimmel "should have" said what he did. It's whether the Asshole Turd should have been able to get him removed.

It's not just Kimmel who's affected. EVERY SINGLE morning, evening, or late-night talk show host, entertainer, etc. will have to censor/modify their script to avoid appearing critical of the Orange Fuck. Walking on eggshells to avoid retaliation from Emperor Scumbag.

As an aside, is it some kind of pathology or speech defect that has Trump using "Trump" instead of "me" when he babbles about himself? Like the royal "we" or something?

Reality --- Good for the goose, good for the gander --- May be an image of 1 person and text that says 'Jimmy on Rosane Barr's tweet. "And ABC, to their credit, didn't waste any time; they canceled her show today. I'm not a fan of censorship, but this wasn't about free speech... -it it was about consequences for saying something vile. You can say what you want, but networks don't have to pay you to say it. ...You can' just blame Ambien for that. Actions have consequences, and ABC made the right call." -Jimmy Kimmel, ay 29, 2018 abc'

How'd our nation reach the level of division/s we observe? Regardless of affiliation and/or causation, we've arrived at  a place we shouldn't remain in as much civility has seemingly disappeared. These ideological oppositions have always existed in this country but I'm not sure the current milieu isn't the worst since the Revolution.  All vitriolic political sides, actions, and voices have contributed ( that includes Trump) ; the back and forth entanglements and utterances have both fueled escalation of the problem rather than arrive at any semblance of a civil solution. When we devolve to the point of shooting fellow citizens( and/or sitting Presidents) for political stances, the GPS is way off imo; why encourage more nut jobs to emerge? How many more before we change course? Is the conflict just too enjoyable to temper / discard?

And now back to the "Grumpy Old Retirees With Not Enough To Do Forum" . Enjoy.

You mention the Revolution, but I'm pretty sure there was a lot of political and ideological opposition during the Civil War, when the sitting President was shot and killed.

Nines, are you seriously asking this question? How did it happen? Gradually, as such things always do! Think back, oh, a couple of decades.

Would a multiple rapist, pathological liar, and career con man have had a prayer of staying out of prison, let alone ascending to the White House?

Could a Presidential candidate tell bald-faced lies about immigrants eating cats and not be laughed off the national stage, never mind actually be elected?

Could a President contempuously and repeatedly violate the Constitution, while millions of his loyal lackeys cheered?

And Nines...I don't really know the level of your MAGA-ness, but the short answer to "how did this division happen?" is: with your support. With your blase dismissal of crimes your cult was committing. With your willingness to look the other way. With your enthusiastic acceptance of horrible positions just because the persons espousing those positions had said something else that you liked.

Now, you can angrily counter by insulting me, or by saying Biden did this that the other what about THAT, huh, or by blaming the discord you decry on LIBURRULS, but the answer to your question can be found in a moment of self-reflection:

YOU SUPPORT A PARTY AND A PRESIDENT WHOSE CORE STRATEGY AS WELL AS PHILOSOPHY IS TO DIVIDE THIS COUNTRY AND PROVOKE HATRED AND FEAR.

So if you don't like it--and I do consider your assessment accurate--

STOP KISSING THEIR ASSES!

Now, insult me. Make yourself feel better.

I would place the era of greatest internal division and conflict in the 1960s, when we had core ideological conflict between generations, between races, hawks vs. doves, and an overall wide gulf regarding the role of government in everyday people's lives. And yeah, a President was shot and killed then, as well as RFK, MLK...

What we have today is nothing new. It is very elementary and not nuanced at all, though. It is simply good vs. evil. MAGA and their stinking Turd leader are evil, in the most fundamental definition of the term: they want to hurt people for personal gain and power.

And this will lead to more and more violence. Each side will blame the other, as we've just seen with MAGA blaming Democrats for the actions of a MAGA assassin.

Many people have a hard time with life.   If they arent thoughtful or intelligent  they fall victim to simple, dishonet explanations as to why.     A charismatic, blusterous person can convince them all their problems are due to "other" people that arent like them....different skin color, different religion, different sexual orientation.   SOund familiar ?

Go find the story behind any nut job dictator or religous cult leader  and thats how they rose to power.    Thats what makes Trump popular with his base.

You miss my point in that both sides contribute to the conflict. Both sides err in their inflamed rhetoric in efforts to achieve political points / superiority. You're not intellectually honest enough to admit that..like yourself many on both sides just participate with despisement and lack of willingness to compromise. Typically, your first knee-jerk response is to insult, accuse, and attempt to bait somebody into a tornadic and endless argument loop that ultimately results in the same stagnant outcome. Don't you have a wall to paint or a lawn to mow? What do you accomplish with that approach? Whom have you swayed with your argument methods? How many converts have you recruited here? Zero, but carry on. You're on your own.

No argument there..that event was significant as well.

Oh, sure. Hitler needed a scapegoat. He used the Jews. Trump needed one, too. He used brown people. George Wallace used blacks. Charlie Kirk used trans people.

As you say, scapegoating allows stupid people to leapfrog over logic; it also allows them to evade self-responsibility. My life is shit? It's not because of the bad decisions I've made. It's because of THEM.

There will always be such people, but as I've said before, their numbers are greater in the US than ever before. Is there a cure? My only thought would be to introduce them to the demonized population(s) and show them that the boogeymen are human. Trouble is now, where MAGA is strongest (red shitkicker states), there just aren't that many brown people in everyday life (migrant workers, perhaps). Tay-ucks-ass is the only real exception, and their casually bigoted cowboy culture keeps the brown people at arm's length.

The fundamental problem is that hate is the strongest human emotion: much stronger, and much more pervasive, than love.
