New York City is one of the safest cities in America. 78 percent of Republicans think it's one of the most dangerous.

 

The economy is doing very well, as measured by a number of metrics. 77 percent of Republicans think that it's doing badly.

 

I don't have to tell you what Democrats think--that's not my point. The difference is that Republicans seem to be rejecting objective reality. Crime numbers in NYC and US economic numbers such as GDP as yes, falling inflation can be looked up by anyone. You can find out, for example, that NYC's homicide rate is one-sixth what it was a couple of decades ago.

 

So Paul Krugman asks this basic question: How can we function as a country when large numbers of people just see a different reality from the rest of us?
