Former President Carter enters home hospice condition

Jimmy Carter, our 39th President, has entered hospice conditions at his home in Georgia. His maladies originated with melanoma that eventually metastasized to his liver and other organs. Politically and policy - wise, I had very little in common with the man. But his humanity and associated behavioral traits were evidence of great success throughout his life, much of it displayed after his Presidential term was long over. Condolences to his family and friends, and, due to his strong faith, I'm sure that he will truly Rest In Peace when he eventually passes.

He was a terrible President (the only reason he got elected was as an "antidote" to Nixon the crook) but blossomed later in life as a magnificent diplomat and humanitarian. That's what he should have been doing all along.

He's had a long and productive life, and is indisputably one of the good guys. I remember when all the western states goober Republican governors tore into him for his hit list of western water projects. He was truly baffled at all the rabid support for projects that had cost/benefit ratios of .4 or worse. He refused to compromise, which doomed his Presidency and in turn, doomed us to eight years of Ronny Raygun. Ronny believed in pork.

When he dies, he will cease to exist and his body will be worm food. No heaven. No hell. Not even Cleveland. That's how it works.

Sorry - Carter was a brilliant president.  He presided over a stupid country.    History has proven him right and his critics wrong.

He believed nation building and military intervention in the Middle East was doomed to failure.  His chicken hawk critics believed we should flex our muscles on that stage.   His critics prevailed.   How many trillions of dollars would we have saved following Carter's path?

He believed America needed to invest heavily in alternative energy and break free of dependancy on Middle East oil.   His Reaganite critics disagreed...and his critics prevailed.   Where would our country be today if we started on the path to alternative energy in 1980 instead of 2010?

He had a health care plan that implemented universal coverage for everyone in the country....it  was defeated by other Democrats.   You can thank Ted Kennedy for fucking that one up.   We should have had universal coverage 30 years ago - instead we have 100K medical bankruptcies in the US every year,.

And his biggest knock was rampant inflation which was not of his doing but it was of his resolution via his FED chief, Paul Volcker whose is considered a legend on both sides of the aisle.

If he was reborn into a clone today I'd vote for him in a second.

I don't disagree that he had excellent ideas. But he didn't seem to realize just how much opposition he faced and how implacable all the Nixon-remnant Republicans were. He didn't cut any deals, which is the only way he could have gotten even a fraction of his goals accomplished.

I evaluate him as a terrible President because his unwillingness to settle for half a loaf doomed EVERYTHING he tried to accomplish. The only thing he got done was expanding the number of national parks, which had some Republican support.

History has kind of glossed over how much the Republicans hated the fact that their crooked President had been chased out of office (sound familiar?); they decided to simply obstruct everything Carter wanted to do (sound familiar?) in revenge (no one ever thought Ford had a chance in hell of being elected). Carter struggled against this for his entire term--and then we had the Assaholah, Afghanistan, etc. So yeah, he was also unlucky.

A great President and a great person.

Great man terrible president

Also he was blamed for the Iran hostage debacle.  Not one to stand up to the power brokering necessary for a POTUS, he said about himself.  But he didn't wallow in self-pity, went right to work for humanitarian causes, Habitat for Humanity being one of many that comes to mind.

Hope his last days are full of peace and joy.

Yeah, when the RepubliQ talking heads babble about "politicians," as if being a politician is something reprehensible and evil, they ignore the fact that to be a functional elected official, you HAVE to be a politician. Carter was no good at that, and he hated it to boot. Perhaps the modern exact opposite would be LBJ. Hell, Trump is a terrific politician (despite his claims that he isn't one). Someone who can get 75 million people to believe a string of lies--even if they're all morons--is highly skilled at politics.

I think Carter knew that he'd been painted into a corner by events and that the Republicans were all lathered up after Watergate--and Ronny Raygun was up on the stage, waving the flag. So I believe that his graceful exit was kind of a relief for him. Certainly, during his time as President, he saw a LOT of things that needed fixing--and decided to try and fix them.

A good man.
