I know I've talked about this before. I'm a student of history, and I'm stunned by the similarities between us now and prewar Germany.

I mention this to friends and MAGA assholes alike, including the jerkwads and the sane ones on this board, and the response is always the same:

1. Some thoughtless bleat like "Godwin's Syndrome" or "TDSTDSTDS AWWWWK!"

2. "Oh, it can't happen here, our democracy is too strong, we have safeguards."

3. A personal attack on me to avoid actual discussion, usually to cover up the shame of being a MAGA.

4. "Things will get worse, but they'll never get as bad as Nazi Germany or anything like that."

To which I reply:

1A. When a comparison with prewar Germany is appropriate, such a response is simplistic and stupid--or disingenuous, meant to deflect any real discussion.

2A. Which of these safeguards has done any more than temporarily slow down Trump? Remember, we have one-party rule.

3A. My opinion doesn't matter insofar as where our country is going. It is what it is. Pissing on the messenger changes nothing

4A. The citizens of Germany, even the most profoundly evil of them, had no inkling of what their country would soon become--the most evil and brutal nation in human history.

So let's all be aware of what's inexorably happening while there's still some chance to stop it. Our country is in mortal danger.
