Godwin On Godwin's Law

Yesterday in the LA Times, Mike Godwin clarified the meaning of Godwin’s law for those that don’t get it. I’d say it is mandatory reading for the conservatives here as they like to incorrectly invoke Godwin’s law as a shield against criticism of inhuman behavior.  I have posted a few relevant paragraphs below, but I recommend everyone read the entire article.

Take the argument that our treatment of those seeking asylum at our border, including children, is not as monstrous as institutionalized genocide. That may be true, but it’s not what you’d call a compelling defense. Similarly, saying (disingenuously) that the administration is just doing what immigration law demands sounds suspiciously like “we were just following orders.” That argument isn’t a good look on anyone.

By all means cite GL if you think some Nazi comparison is baseless, needlessly inflammatory or hyperbolic. But Godwin’s Law was never meant to block us from challenging the institutionalization of cruelty or the callousness of officials who claim to be just following the law. It definitely wasn’t meant to shield our leaders from being slammed for the current fashion of pitching falsehoods as fact. These behaviors, distressing as they are, may not yet add up to a new Reich, but please forgive me for worrying that they’re the “embryonic form” of a horror we hoped we had put behind us.

It is disingenuous for Mark to compare President Trump to the Nazis who are responsible for over 60 million deaths.

However Mark is the one who supports intimidating Republicans & conservatives when they go out in public; which smacks of Hitler's brownshirts of the 1930s

I think it is an entirely appropriate comparison. I agree with Godwin that what we are seeing with the Trump administration is an embryonic form of the types of horrific human cruelty that took place in Nazi Germany.

Actually, Mark thinks that restaurants, bakeries, florists, pharmacists, insurance companies and other businesses that serve the public should be required to serve anyone that wants to buy their goods or use their services.  Alas, Mark's view on this issue did not prevail.

Conservatives have been arguing for the last ten years that any business that has a sincerely held belief (even for-profit corporations that are incapable of having beliefs) should be able to refuse service to anyone they want on that basis. The Supreme Court packed with extremist right wingers has agreed with that argument rather than Mark's.

Instead of complaining about not being served, Sarah Huckabee should be singing the praises of the Red Hen for putting their sincerely held beliefs first and note how such behavior has only become acceptable because conservatism has triumphed on this very issue.

Yes, it is a little hard to feel sympathy for conservatives that are getting exactly what they asked for.

The liberal mindset is a pathetic wasteland.

After seeing the whistleblower video released on MSNBC tonight, I have to say these Trump bastards don’t deserve to be able to get gas at the convenience store without someone heckling them.   They caught one of the toddler prison workers instructing the kids not to talk to the press.

In liberal world intimidation tactics reminiscent of Hitler's brownshirts is acceptable, but according to Mark President Trump is Hitler (who is responsible for 60 million deaths).

It is no longer worth discussing with you

Trump has ordered the kidnapping and imprisonment of over 2000 kids including toddlers and infants. In most of the cases, they don’t even know which kids belong to which parents. There never was a plan to reunite them with their parents.  Intimidate? Someone missing their fried chicken dinner is not intimidation. They all ought to be charged with crimes against humanity and put on trial in the Hague. You are willing to turn a blind eye to mass child abuse. I am not.

Where was your unblind eye when this was happening? Watching CNN and MSNBC? It certainly wasn't focused on Øbama...

Republicans constantly sow the wind and then complain about the whirlwind. How about it Tom Is Paul Ryan a Nazi Brownshirt?

Mark -you keep scraping the bottom of the barrel in order to keep stirring the liberal pot. Pathetic. -- What is your spin on the Supreme Court ruling today about President Trump's travel ban? Will you also label the Supreme Court justices who made the correct ruling as being Nazi Brownshirts?
