The WSJ isn't exactly a liberal news source. I really doubt that they would distort this story to make Trump look bad--to make him look good, perhaps.
At any rate, we'll have Bolton's book in its entirety available very soon, at which point we'll get the usual tweetstorm from Trump, who will call Bolton every name available in Trump's limited vocabulary. Fox News will paint Bolton a liar and probably come up with some way to connect him with Hillary Clinton or Cruella Deville. Those things will happen as surely as the night doth follow the day.
Xi has played Trump pretty skillfully so far. It's debatable, though, given Trump's impending loss, whether he'll bother listening to Trump between now and November.

Is this unexpected that trump would ask for Communist foreign help to win the presidency... Again?
Well, we do know that if something's in his playbook, and he's used it successfully before, he'll use it again. He's sort of like a golfer with only two or three clubs in his bag.
He seems to already have decided that his 2020 campaign will be all about pandering to "the base" and hoping it works again. So we'll see the race card played--again--recent events notwithstanding; he'll grasp at any straws to "prove" that the economy is reentering Happy Fun Sunshine Land; he'll downplay the coronavirus and maybe come up with another miracle cure; and he'll insult and demean Biden and any other opponents.
We will, of course, also see several rambling, drooling speeches at his hate rallies.
The administration is claiming that the information in Bolton's book is classified. Which means it's true. Because you can't ask to classify lies.
