OK, first of all--why is January 1 the "new year"? Logically, the winter solstice--Dec. 21 by our calendar--ends the old year and begins the new. So why Jan.1?
We can thank/blame the Christian church. Since pre-civilization times, people all over the world have celebrated the winter solstice. They all could recognize the day when the days stopped getting shorter and the weather would begin to improve again (though it would still be five months if you lived in Minnesota). But the Church wanted to sell its Jesus myth, and decided to co-opt the solstice celebration. But just so as not to ruffle too many feathers, it moved "Christmas" a few days down the road, so the pagan/converts could still have both holidays if they wanted. Good PR.
So IMHO, our year has already begun. I wish everyone prosperity, health, happiness, and good, cheap beer. We have wars and bar fights and everything in between to resolve, but from a historical perspective, things are pretty peaceful and prosperous. We have politicians here who make their hay by telling whomever will listen that things are awful awful awful and the only salvation at hand is to vote for them. It's the same bunkum we're heard before. The truth is, we may have problems, but overall, we're better off than at any time in history.
We do have the issue of a Hitler wannabe who may wind up being our nation's first prison President. But he isn't the greatest danger--it's all the RepubliQ politicians who have stripped away, or want to strip away, basic American/human rights. Rather than serving their constituents, they just chant "woke woke woke woke woke" in the hope that it will get them votes.
And this leads to our most fundamental danger of all--the tens of millions of idiotic, stupid, evil, credulous, nasty, naive, and cretinous fools who actually vote for these politicians and have voted and will vote for the Orange Turd--AGAIN. Your job and mine is to nullify them. We must do so lawfully, even though the much more satisfying solution involves banishment, sterilization, etc. So in lieu of that--find a MAGA who will listen to you, and tell them how shameful it will be if they vote for a con man yet again. Fool you three times, shame on you.
And whatever happens, have faith in the future. Even if that winds up being the last thousand surviving humans inhabiting the Mars colony.
