Sen. Bernie Moreno is forcing Democrats to eat their own words on immigration. --- The Ohio Republican announced he will reintroduce former Sen. Harry Reid’s 1993 immigration bill, reviving a proposal from the onetime Democrat Senate leader that would restrict birthright citizenship, limit legal immigration, cap refugee admissions, strengthen border enforcement, and make clear that noncitizens have no business voting in American elections. --- “I will reintroduce this exact bill when I return to DC,” Moreno wrote on X. “Let’s see how today’s DC Democrats will vote when offered the ideas of the Democrat party that used to love this country and the American people!” --- Moreno’s version, titled the Immigration Stabilization Act of 2026, would clarify that birthright citizenship does not automatically extend to children born in the United States to mothers who are not U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents and who remain subject to the jurisdiction of a foreign country. --- That provision goes straight at one of the biggest magnets in the immigration system: the idea that illegal aliens can cross the border, give birth on U.S. soil, and secure automatic citizenship for their children. Moreno’s bill would put Congress on record and force Democrats to defend the loophole they now treat as sacred. --- The bill would also make it a federal crime for noncitizens to vote in federal, state, or local elections and would nullify those votes. In other words, only Americans should decide American elections, a principle that somehow became controversial once the left discovered the political utility of mass migration. --- The proposal would also overhaul legal immigration by restructuring family-based visas, setting employment-based immigrant visas at zero, and shifting family preferences toward parents of adult U.S. citizens. It would cap annual refugee admissions at 50,000 and require the president to reserve those slots for people with the greatest humanitarian need, rather than letting refugee policy become another backdoor migration pipeline. --- On the border, Moreno’s bill would add thousands of Border Patrol agents, impose user fees on border crossings to help pay for enforcement, and establish a dedicated Border Control Trust Fund to finance more agents, technology, and barriers. --- Moreno made the political point plainly: before Democrats handed their immigration policy over to activists and open-borders pressure groups, one of their own Senate leaders introduced a bill that would now be denounced by the left as extreme. --- “Before far-left radicals took over the Democrat Party, their leader Harry Reid introduced a great bill to end birthright citizenship, ensure no illegals could vote, and crack down on employers who abuse illegal labor,” Moreno said.
