I've been wanting to do this for ages now. I've driven to Alaska twice, but damn, the distances are long and the costs are high--and of course, you can only see a couple of places in coastal Alaska by road. So a cruise seems like a good way to experience southeast Alaska.
Of course, there was a huge demand when they restarted cruises, and most bookings sold out quickly. Unlike every other year, no discounts were offered. But the sailings after Labor Day are quite a bit cheaper, and haven't sold out. The prices drop quite a bit as of the last week of September. Also, the "single supplement" (where one person pays as much as two people) is often less then.
So for a seven-day trip commencing about Sept. 25, I'm looking at about $1100 plus taxes, fees, fee taxes, and taxes on fees. Plus various "miscellaneous charges," such as compulsory gratuities. So, about $1500 when the dust settles.
However, I've been warned that in that part of the world, it's definitely already deep into fall and the weather may not be very user-friendly. The weather there can be variable any time of year, of course, but I don't want to spend all that money to spend a week sailing through fog and rain. So has anyone ever taken an Alaska cruise in the fall? If so, what kind of weather did you experience?
